The past few years have been all go, all the time. With work, uni, internships all piling up on top of one another, there has been little time in my life to just relax. And so, as a soon-to-be graduate, May 2017 has been all about relishing in the time that I now have to do nothing. My mental health has been shot to pieces since I went to university and so in the past four weeks I’ve been working on rebuilding that.
For the first time in ages I’ve actually had spare time, suddenly my evenings and my weekends are mine to do what I want with – no more having to work 24/7 to meet my deadlines or having to cram in extra reading before tomorrow’s seminar.
And that has felt unbelievably good.
This month I celebrated the end of my degree with my graduation ball and after two years of living in the same house I moved all of my belongings out of my student house and back into my family house in Milton Keynes. That definitely has not been easy, especially as I’ve been downgraded to the small bedroom at home so trying to cram all of my belongings into one wardrobe has been virtually impossible but I’m slowly getting there now.
At the start of the month I had a bit of a meltdown, I felt as if now that I’m no longer a student I had to immediately get everything together but I definitely know that isn’t the case now. And while slowing down is often associated with Winter I’ve been more than happy to re-energise myself this month; I’ve made the most of my spare time by fitting in long-overdue trips out for dinner with my friends, a good amount of long rides on Beano (as well as a few jumping practices and a gymkhana) and I’ve even squeezed in a few bike-rides around Milton Keynes. But in amongst all of that, I’ve also enjoyed a few evenings spent by myself and I’ve made a conscious decision to not cram too many plans in all at once as I now know it stresses me out! And so, I’ve also enjoyed spending time curled up in bed on the rainier days (and even occasionally in the sunshine in my garden) working on my blog. I’ve been working on lots of new posts so keep your eyes peeled for them over the next few weeks! And while this post has been largely about the freedom that I’ve felt since leaving education behind, I couldn’t quite get rid of my love for learning and so as well as enrolling on All That Is She’s Instagram E-Course, I’ve been working my way through The Travel Hack’s ‘The Blogger Course‘ too.
But this month hasn’t been all sunshine and rainbows, my family has still been going through a huge amount of stress and no one quite prepares you for how lost you might find yourself feeling after you’ve graduated. In the space of a month I’ve gone from having my own house, living with friends and having the security blanket of education to living back with my parents, moving away from the strong friendships I’ve established over the past three years and to no longer having a set plan for the next few years of my life. And so, in an attempt to feel a little bit less lost and to give myself a tiny bit of direction, I’ve been making myself a list of both long-term and short-term goals. There are a few that I’m keeping to myself but I can say that there are thoughts of a house deposit lurking around in the fore-front of my mind, a surprise project that will be being revealed on here in the next few days, I’ve got a holiday to Bali booked and I’m hoping to squeeze in a small weekend trip to the coast this summer too!
For me, May has been about rebooting myself before I started work, giving myself new goals to work towards that don’t involve handing in a piece of coursework and getting myself back to the person I used to be before my mental health plummeted. I’m hoping that June is going to follow in May’s footsteps. My birthday is coming up soon, I’ve officially started my first ‘real’ job (which I’m loving) so I’m excited to see where that takes me this month and I will hopefully have made a small amount of progress to at least one of my goals!
